Subject Overview

This subject develops the theory and practice of wellness assessment and health analysis and the analysis and interpretation of selected diagnostic information pertaining to wellness. You will explore the approaches to the assessment of health for individuals and society, and the analysis of signs, symptoms and pathologies and develop the skills for making prescriptions for healthy lifestyles and health promotion.

 

Learning Outcomes

  1. Critically discuss the different ways of obtaining information about a person’s health status and the difference between diagnosing illness, assessing disease risk, and measuring wellness
  2. Explain the use of population data and the difference between screening tests, diagnostic tests and gold standard tests
  3. Analyse the variation of different test results throughout the lifespan and discuss the complexities in assessing biological and chronological age
  4. Critically discuss the limitations of diagnostic testing, including the concepts of specificity and sensitivity, false positives and false negatives
  5. Assess the use of diagnostic techniques and therapeutic responses used within traditional and alternative medicine systems
